A driver has to tell his team of technicians about the car's reactions, so he needs a certain amount of sensitivity, but he must also be able to interpret and explain, its behaviour, so as to give a clear and concise account.
.....a classic mistake is to confuse cause and effect. A typical case is when oversteer at the exit is caused by understeer at the entry. If the driver does not recognise this link he will want the oversteer corrected while instead the problem is the understeer. Because the car slides away at he front end, the driver thinks he is not steering enough and increases the lock to counteract the understeer. When he has reached the steering limit, which is reached quite quickly, by turning the wheel further the driver will have the opposite effect : OVERSTEER. This is because he has braked the rear end of the car with the front wheels. At this stage the game is up and the car will slide out of the bend on its rear tyres.
From this it is obvious that a good driver, and a good test driver, is one who is conscious of what he is doing and, above all, has total confidence in his handling of the car.
